The Best Salon Award continues to set the standard for excellence in salon design, recognizing the creative visionaries who transform spaces into highly inspirational spaces.
Last year’s competition highlighted the richness of global diversity and the extraordinary creativity of hairstylists and designers, reinforcing the central role of aesthetics and functionality in creating unique and unforgettable experiences for every customer.
The Story of the Prestigious Award Told by Roberto Pissimiglia
How did Estetica’s commitment to hair salons, their interior design, their functionality and also their conception as spaces of excellence come about?
There are at least two answers. The first is that Estetica has always tried to enhance all the various aspects related to hairdressing and one of these is the place where hairdressers make their clients become beautiful.
In the 80s and 90s in particular, hair salons underwent a real change in light and image, with increasingly larger, brighter spaces, visible from the outside; transparent windows, with an area dedicated to washing, an area dedicated to technique, an area dedicated to the resale of products and a reception that represented the beating heart of the salon. Estetica dedicated many pages, images and stories to this important evolution, showing how hair salons paved the way for a revolution in interior salon design.
‘Made in Italy’ is a driving force in the salon furniture and interiors sector.
Secondly, what with Estetica being an Italian magazine, it captured the essence and the leadership that companies in the sector had on a global level. A very large proportion of the design of hair salons was produced in Italy, with Scandiano in the province of Reggio Emilia, emerging as a centre of excellence.
These two aspects are the reason why Estetica has become increasingly interested in this sector.
The early 2000s, a project was born that, in 2003, led to the publication of EsteticaDesign, first showcased in Paris . It was a great event that saw the participation of gallery owners, antique dealers, architects, designers and not only hairdressers, because the boundaries of EsteticaDesign went beyond the specific, making it clear how the interior design of beauty salons was inserted into global trends and characterised common spaces such as hotels, restaurants, shops and many others.
When in 2005 the first signs of great participation in all this began to appear, it was decided to give recognition to those salons that in particular traced this path, left an imprint and then became a point of reference.
The Beginnings of the Award
Initially called the EsteticaDesign Award, it debuted at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes in 2005 on a very
One of the main partners of EsteticaDesign at the time was L’Oréal Professionnel, and from there a new path began which, in 2007, led to its second edition in Bologna, at Cosmoprof. Then, in 2014, it became What’s Up in Paris by EsteticaDesign and with this we have arrived at the tenth edition, therefore 20 years of the award, 10 years of the style and design award, 10 years of What’s Up in Paris, all around the phenomenon of the interior design of hair salons.
