Grow as a Stylist: Education Alone is Not Enough

Discover more ways to grow as a stylist through embracing fresh ideas and focusing on continuous personal growth.

Hairdressing skills are certainly teachable; however, fresh knowledge requires a mind ready to accept it. Without a truly welcoming attitude, new learning provides little personal benefit. Therefore, to grow as a stylist, embracing continuous education becomes absolutely paramount. Stylists must prepare for this journey, ready for exciting new ideas.

Ellen Devine, Sam Villa ArTeam and Master Stylist at Lunatic Fringe shares three things she does to open her mind up to new experiences and learning:

Immersive Discovery

This year I promised myself to travel more anytime the opportunity presented itself, especially internationally. Much how a chef explores the world to eat food and research, as I travel, I’m studying hair. We’re blessed to have social media, but seeing how everyday people wear their hair in real life is so important to stylists working behind the chair.   I like to consider the climate and how that affects the hair I see in each region and speak to locals about their hair. Travel keeps me inspired to continually seek simple solutions with impactful results for hair in the salon.

In-Person Education

Ever since 2020 we hairdressers have had access to invaluable education online. I love teaching online, as well as learning, yet there is something special about going to experience education with other people.  Whether it be a hair show or a class, we all thrive off community. I was just at the Cosmoprof Bologna Worldwide hair show in Italy, and you can literally feel the energy in the room like a buzz.  I’m looking forward to bringing that energy to Premier Orlando this year in my classes on haircutting, but most importantly I’m really looking forward to experience that special energy that only happens when humans gather.  We grow as hairdressers when we attend these events/classes, whether for the inspiration or connection to community.

Self-Care

Stylists’ jobs are demanding…we’re often on our feet 12 hours a day actively listening to others, and this caring takes a lot of energy.   So, find time for yourself through a hobby or wellness activities such a massage/meditation and yoga. We must look after our bodies and our mental health to create a long-lasting career. Use ergonomic tools, take time off and feed your soul…never feel guilty about taking care of yourself.  Finding balance allows one to be present and centered, which opens up new experiences…and new experiences allow us to see the world from a different perspective helping us to be more empathetic towards others, and ourselves.  It gives us the confidence to creative.
