Notably, nearly a quarter of respondents, 23%, completed their qualifications between the ages of 16 and 18, marking an early start.

However, the survey also demonstrates a significant spread across other age groups, showcasing the industry’s accessibility. Approximately 24% of newly qualified stylists entered the field between the ages of 19 and 25. Furthermore, a substantial 25% qualified within the 26 to 35 age bracket, while another 23% embarked on their hairdressing careers between the ages of 36 and 50. This diverse demographic underscores the welcoming nature of hairdressing as a profession.

The survey findings indicate robust employment prospects within the hairdressing sector for newly qualified individuals. The industry offers a variety of successful career pathways. A significant 34% of the respondents have successfully established themselves as self-employed professionals. Furthermore, 26% are currently employed within salons and other businesses, enjoying stability and ongoing development.

The VTCT Skills Survey also identified initial hurdles faced by newly qualified stylists. A notable 30% cited finding employment and building a consistent client base as a key challenge. Additionally, a significant 17% emphasized the importance of developing and maintaining confidence. This highlights the need for ongoing mentorship and practical experience.

The desire for further professional development is evident among this new generation. Many expressed a keen interest in acquiring additional training. The survey highlighted specific areas for development, indicating a proactive approach to career advancement. Notably, colouring techniques were mentioned by 27 individuals.
