Christopher Laird, co-owner of salon November Collective in Livingston, near Edinburgh, has had a career defying moment working backstage at the EE BAFTA Film Awards. It was a star-studded evening packed with the actors and creatives behind some of the very best in films from Hollywood and here at home.
It’s not surprising at all that hairdressing is one of the most trusted professions. Christopher Laird is proof that hairdressers do way more than just cut and colour hair, and that being successful is so much more than that.
Christopher opened November Collective, along with co-owner Emma-Louise Cantwell (left), less than two years ago. Having worked as an educator for some of hairdressing’s biggest brands, as well as styling for celebrities, opening a salon was a natural progression and the duo have created an inclusive, creative space specialising in glamorous, wearable hair and professional beauty treatments.
Christopher took up the opportunity to work backstage at the BAFTA’S for ghd, who were the official hair partner to the awards, in the nominee style suites at the Savoy Hotel. Prepping some of the biggest stars such as Hannah Dodd ready for the red carpet and pre-stage touch ups for the likes of Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Geri Halliwell, and Cate Blanchett, he speaks of his experience, “This was a total pinch me moment!” says Christopher, “10 years ago, I never would have imagined I would be in my dream career. I’ve worked really hard to get to this point in my life and to have this recognition in the industry and to be given the opportunity to work at such a highly prestigious awards show is such a huge honour”.
The trust between a hairdresser and a client covers so many different things, it’s the responsibility of the hairdresser to provide the client with an unforgettable service from start to finish. You have to be a problem solver, confidant, highly skilled and able to adapt these skills at a moments notice. Most importantly, you have to be an expert in making people feel confident and great about themselves!
