Scrummi Certified as B Corp

Salons and spas are jettisoning laundry in favour of disposable towels. This is to fix costs in the face of enormous energy price hikes expected in 2023. But not all disposable towels are equal, warns Scrummi. This month it announced it has joined the small number of UK companies certified as B Corp.

The disposable towel manufacturer spent two years working towards the arduous certification. This recognises Scrummi has met B Corp’s high standards of social and environmental performance, accountability and transparency.

“As a leading manufacturer and supplier of compostable towels worldwide, Scrummi prioritises accreditation as it instantly demonstrates to our global customers our commitment to sustainability in the professional hair and beauty industries,” said Rob Cooper, Managing Director of Scrummi. “As more and more salons wake up to the fact that disposable towels can be more affordable than washing and drying cotton towels. This also uses up huge amounts of electricity and water. it is important they buy into a trusted, sustainable brand that guarantees quality and consistency.”

It is the uncertainty as well as the fear of escalating energy costs that is driving the uptake in disposables. The government backed Energy Price Guarantee will come to an end in April 2023 instead of 2024, and experts including Money Saving Expert founder Martin Lewis are warning of eye watering rises. The most recent projection is that costs could go up by as much as 48% in April 2023.

“Swapping to Scrummi towels cuts back on energy-guzzling and manpower-heavy laundering, allowing increasing numbers of salons to stabilise their overhead costs,” added Rob. “Scrummi offers a range of sustainable towels that are more absorbent than cotton, and which compost completely, leaving no trace. We can promise salons consistency and sustainability during difficult times.”

As well as gaining its certified B Corporation status, Scrummi also has the European Seedling Certification and REA Environmental Agency Approval, which proves its composting credentials.
