The Virtual Aveda Master Jam 2021 was a huge fundraiser, raising over $70,000 for California salons and other salons impacted around the country through the Salon & Spa Relief Fund.
Not only was this an amazing night that broke fundraising goals, but the artistry was top notch! Estetica is glad to bring you two of the most inspiring looks created by Antoinette Beenders, Aveda’s SVP of Global Professional Artistry; and Van Council, owner, Van Michael Salons. The event also featured master artists Ginger Boyle, owner, Planet Salon; Renee Gadar, Aveda global artistic director, textured hair; Joey Hooten, color education director at Van Michael Salons; Jo McKay, Aveda European technical hair specialist; Jon Reyman, owner, Spoke & Weal salons; and Gerard Scarpaci, co-founder of Hairbrained.me.
The “Pom Flower Braid” by Antoinette Beenders
“After creating and presenting numerous virtual technique-and inspiration-based virtual classes, I was reliving my passion for braiding which is what got me originally inspired to enter the industry nearly 40 years ago. I thought I would add a new spin to the technique and decided to braid the hair and then cut into the braid. The result was not quite what I had hoped for – the outcome did not feel dramatic enough and therefore I decided to play with some textured synthetic hair,” said Antoinette.
“Instead of braiding this time, I decided to make the hair bigger first and then control it with elastic, this then turned into a pom pom. Happy with my large pom poms, I took it a step further, using scissors to cut into the ball. Because of the texture of the hair, the pom started to open up just like a flower that is starting to bloom.“
“As this is my first attempt at this new look, I decided to keep the color simple and stick to black and white, which I then reflected back in the video adding a dash of red with the lipstick, an ode back to the 1990’s as well as the color of my two beloved Jack Russell’s!”
The “Neon Lux” by Van Michael Creative Team
The second look comes from the Van Michael Creative Team, led by Van Council (full credits below). Though green hair isn’t a natural hair tone, the inspiration for Neon Lux collection was to create colors actually found in nature and was inspired by more muted versions of the vibrant color lines to give it more of a natural appearance.

Virtual Aveda Master Jam was osted by Barbara De Laere, Aveda global brand president, and David Wagner, owner of Juut Salonspas. This live, interactive event brought industry titans, including several California salon owners, together for an inspiring night to support California salons as they reopen after months of state-mandated closures.
