Aveda Senior VP, Global Creative Artistry Antoinette Beenders created the hair look for the Naeem Khan SS20 runway show: a sleek and “superhuman” updo featuring a dimensional fishtail braid that was inspired by the architecture of the beautiful Zaha Hadid building where the show was held.
To get the look, Antoinette started by sectioning the hair into three parts and then pulled the bottom section into a tight, clean ponytail. To ensure the bottom and sides had an ultra-sleek effect, Anotinette used Aveda Air Control Hair Spray to spray the hair before blow drying it back on a low-heat, low-speed setting. After the bottom ponytail was sleek and secure, she began doing the same with the top two sections – spraying Air Control and combing back small sections at a time, sealing them down tight to the head using a blow dryer and letting the ends of the hair fall down against the bottom ponytail.
Next, Antoinette used a straightening iron and micro-crimping iron to straighten and crimp various, alternating pieces of the loose hair, giving it more volume, contrast and other-worldly dimension. She then began creating a fishtail braid, working her way down the loose hair, including the hair from the low ponytail until the fishtail braid was complete, and then tucked the fishtail braid under and secured it with hairpins.
Antoinette finished this look by using an Aveda Uruku Bronzing Brush to apply Aveda Brilliant Spray-On Shine all over the slicked-back hair to give it even more dimension and shine.
“The combination of this incredible Zaha Hadid building along with Naeem’s beautiful gowns made me feel like I should go really architectural for this look,” said Antoinette. “We added a beautiful couture texture to the back and contrasted it with sleek, high-shine in the front – I feel like that almost reflects the architecture of this building!”
