Post-Holiday Hair: The Lure of the Drastic Hair Makeover!

You can’t always give your hair the care it needs and you sometimes have to make a radical change to your look. Here’s the advice of hairstylist Gianluca Grechi about this season’s hair and his recommendations to get over those post-holiday hair blues.

Dehydrated, dull, and faded. Lifeless, with split and frizz. Nonetheless how take care of your hair during the summer, often when you get home from your vacation, you can’t avoid a drastic cut. We asked hairstylist Gianluca Grechi, Director of Pucci Hairspace a salon in Pisa, Italy and member of the Davines Artistic Team, to tell us more.

Usually, at the end of summer we re-diagnose every client, a complete consultation, fully analyzing the health of the shaft and scalp (in the trichology cabin we have an enlarging microcamera),” explains Gianluca. “My advice is to dedicate 5 minutes extra to the client so that you can start with a correct diagnosis and recognise any potential problems.

What do you recommend for clients coming back from their vacation?
If the hair needs to drink (hydration) and eat (nourishment), at the end of summer it definitely has more need to drink. So we propose treatments that restore the capacity to retain moisture in the hair, like masks with a yellow melon base. In the summer we often tie our hair back, keep it wet or damp, so we need to restore elasticity.  And then there is the damage done by salt and sun… These treatments give nourishment, like keratin, so we recommend them as a follow-up. Moreover, continuous climatic changes like we had last summer have anticipated seasonal hair loss, so we are already working on hair-loss prevention with products that reinforce the scalp and shaft, to stimulate hair growth and micro-circulation.”

And for cut and color?
I love the color that hair takes on after the summer. So I try to revive the natural highlights that occur as much as possible. And I try not to eliminate them with an excessive cut, but rather with a ‘trim’. I use tone-on-tone products and natural highlighters without modifying the level of the tone. I don’t recommend lightening or darkening.

There may be times, however, when the hair is so damaged that you can’t avoid a drastic cut…
In these cases, wherever possible I propose a mid-length, because hair trends next autumn will see a return of volumes and lengths. Yes to bobs with full perimeters, just give the idea of healthy hair full of body. No to layering and thinning.”

And for those who have to or want to opt for a very short cut?
The best option is a pixie with defined shape and very destructured inside. The general trend, for any type of hairstyle, is to give the perimeter a clear definition (full form) and to give the inside freedom of movement:, so as to obtain a very natural look.

When is a drastic cut the only alternative?
When the styling doesn’t last.
When hair dries too quickly (as it means there is too little water/hydration).
When we we put a strand in the palm of the hand and see that the quantity of hair diminishes towards the tips.
When hair is rough to the touch, or when we see that the cuticles are lifted excessively, not only at the tips but also along the shaft.”
