NYFW How To: Dion Lee’s Microbraid Magic by Eugene Souleiman

In a wardrobe of blushed pink, chic blacks and glamorous reds, the hairstyles created at Dion Lee SS19 evoked a paradoxical but complimentary toughness.

For the hair look, Eugene Souleiman, Wella Professionals Global Creative Director and ghd Fashion Week Ambassador said his ambition was to “take the ‘lady’ out of the clothes”. He aimed to add some tension, some aggression and let the attitude strut for itself. The hair is “not masculine, just tougher. The intention is stronger. More assertive, slightly aggressive. It’s not a ‘pretty’ ponytail – there’s nothing dainty about this look,” said Eugene.

On his inspiration, Eugene said, “There’s no era. It’s timeless. I wanted it to feel like something quite new and lateral but not weird or Avant-garde in any way. There’s something there that shouldn’t be there, but it actually works.

To achieve this “new take on minimalism and texture,Eugene settled on the technique of micro-braiding. Each model’s hair was adorned with a host of detailed and technically demanding braids, which subtly blended into the look, enhancing the texture and volume in an effortless way.

To my knowledge, I don’t think this has ever been done before which I find quite interesting even though it’s a serious sort of technique, it actually doesn’t feel serious or tricky at all. In fact, you’re not really sure what you’re looking at it.

To create the microbraids, Eugene used Wella Professionals’ EIMI styling range, starting with EIMI Perfect Me, a lightweight beauty balm lotion designed to create a natural style with smoothness, to prep the hair for styling. Then, on sections featuring a microbraid, Eugene added texture with EIMI Ocean Spritz, a salt spray for gritty, matte texture. To top off the look, Eugene sprayed EIMI Glam Mist, a shine mist with a luminous finish that results in a shine that is almost matte in outcome. “There’s a raw texture that’s combined into something quite tight.

After braiding, Eugene used the ghd Curve Creative Wand to add movement to the look where required. The brand new ghd Platinum+ Styler also played a key role in creating rigidity to the up-dos. Where body was needed, Eugene and his team used their fingers to scrape the hair back and then secure with some added heat using the ghd Air Hair Dryer.
