Silver Hair: Unique, Super Classy and On-Trend Style

Gray and silver locks require care and devotion. Here’s what top Californian colourist and influencer, Jikaiah Stevens, had to tell us.

Silver Hair is all the rage! Until a few years ago, white, silver and platinum were considered shades of hair preferred only by our grandmothers, but not anymore. Today these tones are trendy and “in” for all age groups. They complement every outfit and can convey every personality type: short geometric cuts for the most avant-garde and edgy, to voluptuous and sensual waves the most glamorous and chic among us. We asked colorist Jikaiah Stevens from the Edo Salon in San Francisco to tell us something more about silver hair.

There are different types of customers: young girls who want a trendy color through to more mature women who, after years of coloring their hair, to go back to their roots,” Jikaiah says. “Both are common client groups,  but over the last few years it has been mostly younger clients in my chair.”

Silver Hair: What’s trending?
The current silver hair trends tend to include a root shadow of a dark Smokey grey and transition to a lighter gray or silver towards the ends.

Who would you recommend it to?
Someone who is fashion forward and bold, while being willing to invest in regular salon appointments and aftercare: good silver hair requires a lot of up-keep.

Who does silver hair work best for?
As for skin tones it works well on a lot of ranges – from tanned or olive through to porcelain. However, it tends to crete a pallid, washed out effect on people out who naturally tend to have a more ashen skin tone.

What should clients expect when transitioning to grey hair after years of color?
Most likely pre-lightening in foil followed by color application and blending. Multiple appointments will almost certainly be required before the desired color is fully achieved.

Silver on a very dark base: is it possible?
Yes of course, but it takes a lot of time, skill and commitment, as well as really good products to ensure the hair is kept damage-free in the process.

And the care regimen between salon visits?
I recommend a personalized color conditioner that I custom make for my clients to take home, or one of our own Evo Fabuloso purple platinum coloured conditioners.

Silver Hair: 5 professional tips?
– BlondeMe Bleach by Schwarzkopf Professional (it is incredibly strong, as well as conditioning).
– A very thorough personal client consultation prior to booking or on colouring day.
– Having the client prepare their hair by using Olaplex the day before.
– Using Redken’s Shades EQ toners in 9T.
– Patience and constantly checking and washing out section by section so no strands are allowed to get over processed.
