Estetica Exclusive! Global BLONDME Ambassador Kim Vo shares his Colorist Journey

Kim Vo has a talent that has brought his clients the perfect blonde. The French-educated Vietnamese colorist has dedicated his life to tackling the most difficult hair color and has become the sensei of blondes.

There are one million things that can go wrong with a client’s blonde. She can come back using words like brassy, ashy, grey, white, orange, blorange, and even green, but it is quite the challenge to hear the magical word: perfect.

Kim’s skills have taken him from a reality television judge on Bravo T.V.’s “Shear Genius,” to being a regular in makeover shows, and finally being featured as the stylist of the stars. His clients include the infamous golden goddesses, Kate Hudson, Kirsten Dunst, Teri Hatcher, Goldie Hawn, among others. It makes sense then, that he is the Schwarzkopf Professional BLONDME Global Ambassador.

At the moment, Kim is hosting THE LOOK: ALL STARS next to actress Tori Spelling, in the new upbeat head-to-toe makeover competition show on the CW featuring two teams of beauty and fashion experts at the top of their game, performing real-world and aspirational transformations. His journey is a fascinating one.

What is it about Schwarzkopf Professional that inspired you to choose it as the culture you want to be a part of?
Although I’ve been the Global BLONDME Ambassador for the last 6 years, I’ve been using Schwarzkopf Professional for over a decade. I love the colors and the tonalities that are different than any other color line I’ve ever experienced. The ashes truly stay ash and the reds truly stay red.

What has been your role with the company till now and what are your future plans?
It’s been a pleasure to be a look influencer of the collection and helping come up with amazing colors and combinations. As far as the future, I love seeing trends form and we’ve got a few of our own that I think you will love. At the Kim Vo Salon we have three strong looks for this year – ethereal platinum, creamy blonde, and caramel rose. These are looks that are progressive and it is fun to see them evolve from celebrities to festival hair.”

Why is education important as a blonde expert?
Education is so important because you never stop growing. Blondes have so many hues and point of views. There are billions of combinations, you just need to unlock them and that is education!

What role did education play in your journey and how do you apply that to your role as an educator?
Education is the fundamental base of all color and it’s important to continue the process. I only teach what I’ve experienced and what has worked in my salon. This is more of a myopic approach to teaching.

What is a piece of unforgettable advice that you have received in the past for your professional growth as a colorist?
Always be true to yourself and your art. So, if you think your client’s hair has a certain hue, it has a certain hue! Don’t kid yourself and don’t ask others.  The moment you are real with yourself, you’ll be real with your color.

What excites you the most right now about the industry and where trends are evolving towards?
In this time everything goes, which I love. Right now I see decades not only being strong, but blending with each other. So I see the 80s mixing with the 40s and the 90s mixing with today’s modern looks.

Of course, what is your favorite product and why?
BLONDME Tone Enhancing Bonding Shampoo in Cool Blondes. What I love about it is that it’s a color neutralizer as well as a bonding shampoo and it’s up to date with the speed of color and life.
