Celebrity Stylist Tricks! Julianne Hough’s “Holiday Special” Looks by Jill Buck for Joico

We LOVE Julianne Hough! And wow, she really stunned everyone with her looks at Disney’s Christmas Special on ABC and the Thanksgiving Special and Dance Performance. We sat down with Julianne’s hairstylist, Jill Buck from Nine Zero One Salon in West Hollywood who created these looks below.

Jill has been a stylist at Nine Zero One salon for six years and has been working with Julianne on Dancing With The Stars. Jill created three different hairstyles on Julianne for Disney’s Thanksgiving Special, Christmas Special and Dance Performance where Julianne and Nick Lachey performed the opening number on the steps of the Walt Disney World Cinderella Castle. She let us in on all her tricks to give Julianne a fun and flirty ponytail for her Christmas Special, gorgeous 70’s inspired S-shaped curls for her Thanksgiving Special and final extravagant look for her dance performance that required an amped up amount of product to hold her perfect locks in place.

Jill’s Notebook:
“With 3 days of shooting ahead of us, lots of curling and lots of hairspray, it was important that I started each day with the Blonde Life Brightening Veil protectant spray. From roots to ends and especially the hairline, everyday. For our first look of each day we did a fun and flirty ponytail. When hair is extremely blonde like Julianne’s it’s important to see how it reads on camera and typically the blonder it is the more washed out it can look. So when choosing my curl pattern I went more structured in order to see it better. After the hair was curled and spritzed with Joico’s Power Spray, I sectioned a small ponytail on the center of her head, that’s how I ensure the clip in extension will stay hidden inside. Leaving the top hair out, I collected all the hair and secured with a large rubber band. The hair left on top was spritzed again with Power Spray and twisted back using just my fingers to create texture and softness. A few pins and sprays and she was ready to host!“

“As evening began we moved into the Thanksgiving portion of filming. Long days on set meant setting the hair was crucial. Her hair had to remain consistent for 3 days, 15 hours on set. Once I took down the pony tail I gave her a few more sprays of the Blonde Life Brightening Veil protectant before re-curling. You can never have too much protection. I reset her curls in a tighter set moving all away from her face in the same pattern. This look was very much 70’s inspired and I wanted the S shape to be visible. This is where Joico’s Hair Shake Texturizer Spray was key in holding the shape I created while brushing and teasing the S wave. I worked in small sections curl by curl and then gave a generous spray of Power Spray to hold in place once I was happy with it.“

“Julianne’s final look of the Day was the performance hair, the bigger the better she says! I absolutely love doing her hair when she’s dancing or singing because nothing is too much for her. I began by setting the hair the same as the Thanksgiving look set but really amped up the amount of product I used. Performance hair doesn’t need to be as touchable as daytime hair, it needs to be able to sculpt. Hair Shake again was such a great tool and I love that’s it’s a liquid to powder spray because after a long day of products it’s nice to not have another aerosol spray.  Julianne really puts 110% into every performance, it’s so critical that I have a strong hold hairspray that keeps her hair out of her face while she dances and performs. The power spray kept her fly always down as well as her hair in the big S shaped curl style I wanted.“
