Joanne O’Neill was inspired by the masters of art in the style of Chiaroscuro portraits made famous by Leonardo da Vinci and Caravaggio. Leonardo used the style to give a vivid impression to the three-dimensionality of his figures, while Caravaggio used it for contrasts.
The Italian term means light-dark, referring to clear, tonal contrasts in the subject. With this collection, Joanne wanted the contrasts to be between the background, the hair and the clothes. The models took on an angelic feeling, with delicate lace and fabrics contrasting with the stronger shapes in the hair. Avant-garde hair should be beautiful and mesmerizing… and Joanne believes her collection is just that.
