A Wonderful Program: Denman Team supports Malawi Building Project

Denman has supported volunteer projects in Malawi for over 10 years, and in that time, various teams from the company’s local community in Northern Ireland have given up their time to build family homes, farms and community centres.

This year, two members of the Denman team, Export Sales Executive, Julie Huddleston and USA Marketing Executive, Karen Batley will be flying out to Malawi to get a truly “hands on” experience of working with the volunteer team.

Better known for their sales and marketing skills in the hair and beauty industry, they will be hanging up their office attire in exchange for something better suited on a building site for two weeks. In that time, they will work alongside the other team members to lay bricks, cement walls and construct a vocational training centre (whilst trying to remain effortlessly glamorous in tool belts…..!). The centre will be located at Tilinanu Orphanage, in the Malawian capital Lilongwe and will provide facilities for the local community and the orphanage to undertake various courses such as computer training, tailoring and joinery.

The project is operating in conjunction with the Love Support Unite Foundation (LSU) charity that was founded by sisters Alice and Nina Pulford.  Initially, their focus was to set up Tilinanu Orphanage in Lilongwe and obtain sponsorship for the orphans. When this was achieved, they quickly identified the need to provide projects that are sustained and maintained by local people to help eradicate poverty and malnutrition and enhance education facilities for orphans and vulnerable children.

The project is part-funded by the Irish Government with the remaining budget raised by the volunteers through fundraising events such as quiz nights, bun sales and raffles. A Denman Team GoFundMe page has been created for any online donations: www.gofundme.com/karenandjulie
