David Thurston and Alexis Thurston founded the Pulp Riot professional hair color line, the award-winning Butterfly Loft salon, and Ubungalows salon suites. David also founded the Butterfly Circus touring education team and he offers private consulting services.
The Pulp Riot color line can be found in over 800 professional beauty supply stores throughout North America and other parts of the world. Pulp Riot empowers stylists to think of themselves as artists, the hair as their canvas, and Pulp Riot as their paint. Pulp Riot is part of the Luxury Brand Partners family of products that also includes Oribe, R+Co, and Smith & Cult.
Butterfly Loft is an award-winning, eco-friendly, upscale salon and spa occupying a 4,300-square-foot loft space on Ventura Boulevard and home to 49 of Los Angeles’ top beauty professionals. It was selected as the World’s Eco-Friendly Model Salon by Wella, Best New Salon in North America by Salon Designers International, and Best Salon in the Valley by the readers of Ventura Blvd magazine.
Ubungalows, a 6,400-square-foot collection of individual salon suites, helps stylists experience the joys of salon ownership while taking advantage of the opportunities, education, and inspiration that come from being affiliated with Butterfly Loft salon. Ubungalows is home to 40 beauty professionals. Together, the Butterfly Loft and Ubungalows salons have been fully rented for several years and they have a wait list that exceeds 40 stylists.
The Butterfly Circus education team tours the United States and Canada, teaching the latest cutting, coloring, and styling techniques as well as personal and business skills in an innovative, fast-paced format. Butterfly Circus was responsible for an independent education movement that has disrupted the traditional industry salon education model.
David also teaches publicly and offers private consulting services on a wide array of subjects, including building, designing, and managing salons; creating business systems; running salon suites; marketing; and using social media. Together with their businesses, David and Alexis Thurston have over 650,000 Instagram followers.
Prior to entering the beauty industry, David was a Managing Consultant in the San Francisco offices of Navigant Consulting, an international litigation consulting firm. His caseload involved environmental catastrophes, oil spills, groundwater contamination, and asbestos contamination. He received an economics degree from the University of California, Los Angeles. David and Alexis live in Studio City with their two daughters, Bowie and Finley, and are supporters of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).
