Light the Way to Clean Water with Aveda – One Small Change at a Time

For Earth Month 2017, Aveda™ The Art and Science of Pure Flower and Plant Essences invites you to join hands with people around the world to light the way to clean water—one small change at a time.

This year, Aveda strives to raise $6.5 million during theirr annual month of fundraising activities dedicated to protecting water including salon services, fashion shows featuring recycled materials, and sales of the Light the Way™ Candle. Last year the global network of Aveda Artists and corporate employees as well as guests in more than 30 countries passionately pursued a collective goal of helping protect clean water and raised a total of $6.4 million for clean water projects at home and around the world.

Since 1999, thanks to the efforts of the Aveda Network and its guests, Aveda has raised more than $50 million to help fund hundreds of local and global environmental organizations. Since 2007, they have poured efforts into helping more than 920,000 people gain access to clean drinking water.

Here’s how the Aveda Network will be celebrating Earth Month and raising funds for clean water during April 2017:

LIGHT THE WAY FOR GLOBAL GREENGRANTS
Aveda donates 100% of the purchase price (based on its SRP $12) of their signature limited-edition Light the Way™ Candle to Global Greengrants Fund, a nonprofit organization that channels high-impact grants to grassroots groups working to solve environmental problems all around the world. Since 2007, Aveda has raised more than $13 million through Light the Way™ Candle sales.

This year, the images on the Light the Way™ Candle carton were created by children living in the region of Manakara, Madagascar, who benefited from Earth Month funded water projects and whose drawings illustrate the difference clean water can make to all that we love—kids, animals and the environment.

APPOINTMENTS FOR CLEAN WATER
Thousands of Aveda Artists will once again donate their time and talent to clean water causes this April by offering Appointments for Clean Water. Guests are able to get select beauty services from an Aveda Artist at a participating Aveda location—from Tennessee to Thailand and just about everywhere in between—and a portion of all of the proceeds go to local partner non-profit organizations that support clean water projects. It’s the ultimate win-win. Appointments for Clean Water are also designed to raise awareness that clean water is not something to take for granted. It may flow freely from our taps, but there are approximately 780 million people on earth who do not have access to it. In North America, Aveda Artists and guests have helped fund a number of organizations that make a local impact in protecting bodies of water, including the Great Lakes, the Everglades, Lake Tahoe, the Mississippi River.

Internationally, activities such as Appointments for Clean Water have helped to fund local organizations in over 30 countries, such as Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom, Japan, Korea, and Australia. The projects all serve to protect water, whether it is providing access to it, keeping it clean or restoring communities affected by natural disasters, contamination or loss of water. “We’ve now funded projects that have helped bring clean drinking water to thousands of people, thereby reducing incidents of waterborne illness, and giving mothers more time to spend with their families instead of collecting dirty water from far away sources,” says Dave Rapaport, Vice President, Earth and Community Care for Aveda.

WALK THIS WAY
At Aveda, they love fashion and artistry. Especially when we can use it to do good in the world. So they announce this year’s Catwalk for Water events in celebration of Earth Month. Hosted by their salon partners, Institutes and Experience Centers, these eco-chic shows feature visionary hair, spectacular makeup and utterly inventive earth-friendly fashions designed from upcycled and repurposed materials, including Aveda Full Spectrum™ Hair Color tubes, highlighting foils and old Aveda paper shopping bags. Consider Catwalks for Water couture with a conscience, raising awareness and funds for people around the world without access to clean water.

But as fun as it is to see what can be made out of upcycled materials, there’s a very serious message behind the Catwalks for Water shows: Clean water is not something to take for granted. In addition to funding clean water projects, Aveda’s Catwalks for Water events also help foster a sense of community, since their Institutes and salon/spas partner all work together to produce the shows. “The overwhelming success of Catwalks for Water shows reflects the degree to which members of our network are committed to being engaged and to fund-raising for environmental causes,” says Dave Rapaport. “There were over 4,600 Aveda professionals who participated globally in Catwalks for Water shows last year and we are so proud to have such a large group that shares their commitment to the Aveda Mission as well as their recognition of the global need for clean water.”
