The Pulp Riot team is on a mission. They created a wholly new kind of bright culture, where color is the momentum of the brand, and social media is the platform on which it’s education thrives.
David and Alexis Thurston, creators of nationally recognized brands Butterfly Loft and Butterfly Circus, are the architects behind Pulp Riot, an innovative new hair color company that empowers stylists to think of themselves as artists while providing them with superior paint to create their masterpieces.
Their vision fills the gaps of the industry and understands the dynamic between business success and the cool factor that has birthed out of the unicorn and mermaid movements. Since these colorful creatures gained their popularity on IG, high-profile stylists are essential and involved, including Ash Fortis, Iris Smith, Jay Wesley Olson, Ricky Zito, and others worked with the Thurstons to formulate Pulp Riot’s line of hair color products.
This team of stylists from the beauty community had become more influential in shaping current color trends than the traditional beauty industry had, and they had become increasingly underwhelmed by the color options that were available to them, so they set out to formulate products that were easier to apply, had more vibrant tones, faded truer to tone, and lasted longer.
“Pulp Riot’s launch has been quite a ride,” says David Thurston. “The buzz it’s generated and the speed of growth make it one of the biggest beauty industry launches to date, and it has even exceeded our expectations.” They are uniquely positioned to achieve their mission because never before have the people creating the products been so accessible and closely tied to the people using the products.
The Thurstons rounded out their team by forming a partnership with Luxury Brand Partners (Oribe, R+Co, Smith & Cult, V76), a company comprised of seasoned industry veterans whose mission is to nurture prestige, artist-driven beauty brands. “There are a few things we are doing that are unique when it comes to education,” says David. “Pulp Riot currently provides 3 different types of education, this includes Pulp Riot Lab, Pulp Riot is my Jam, and Pulp Riot Hands-On Education.”
With the creation of Pulp Riot and their new education opportunities, your future in hair looks more colorful than ever.
1. Pulp Riot Lab: This is an event that answers the question… what happens when you bring together 20 stylists, 20 models, a professional photographer, and an endless supply of Pulp Riot color? Pulp Riot Lab is an education event where we send a well known stylist to a salon and they teach a creative color class to stylists who come from all over the geographic region. The attendees then work on live models to create Pulp Riot creative color masterpieces. At the conclusion of the event, a professional photographer photographs the models which provides the stylists and us with excellent content to post on social media. The event is like a creative hair party; the music is turned up loud, and we create a positive environment designed to tear away fear and self doubt, foster collaboration, and push the artistic creativity to a new level.
2. Pulp Riot Is My Jam: This is a larger event (think 100 to 150 people), where they teach in a demo-style format. They have well known stylists that teach all the steps to create a Pulp Riot Masterpiece.
Step 1: Preparing the Canvas – Techniques to lighten hair.
Step 2: Painting the Canvas – Creative color techniques.
Step 3: Styling the Artwork – Quick and easy styling techniques.
Step 4: Showcasing the Artwork – Social media tips to get your masterpiece seen.
3. Pulp Riot Hands-On Education: This is a hands-on class (think 20 to 25 students), where they teach lightening and creative color techniques using the Pulp Riot Method. It’s a system where we teach one technique, and then the students do the technique on a doll head. Then they teach another technique, and the students do the next technique on a doll head. It’s a learn, do, learn, do, learn, do method of learning.
