Tips that Could Save Lives in January 2016 Masters Audio Club

Taryn Aiken is a survivor of her own suicide attempts and a survivor of suicide loss (losing her father in 2002), but she used those experiences to form her new reality.

She is a founding member of the Utah Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, a certified safeTALK and Connect Suicide Postvention Trainer, and a dedicated volunteer who shares her story to give hope and educate communities about suicide. In this powerful interview by Winn Claybaugh, Taryn brings clarity and hope to the often-taboo topics of mental illness and suicide.

Taryn Aiken has spent most of her career in a culture that embraces sharing information. As a survivor of her own suicide attempts and a survivor of suicide loss (losing her father Terry Aiken on October 5, 2002), Taryn used those experiences to shape and form her new reality. Today she is a founding member of the Utah Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and has tirelessly volunteered for the past 11 years, sharing her story and passion to give hope and educate our communities about suicide. She is also a certified safeTALK and Connect Suicide Postvention Trainer, facilitating hundreds of seminars to many different groups, including the EMS Conference, speaking to over 1,000 first responders, and Hill Air Force Base, training medical personnel.

Taryn’s belief in the power of hope to save a life and the power of human connection transforms her approach to suicide prevention. She believes we must create a culture that is smart about mental wellness, and through education about mental disorders, we can dispel the myths and stigma that keep people from seeking help. Her presentations include a discussion about the facts and statistics of suicide both nationally and locally, the warning signs and risk factors for suicidal ideation, and tools for building resiliency in our communities. She empowers her audiences to ask the right questions and offer proper referrals to mental health professionals.

As a full-time student at Utah Valley University, pursuing her bachelor’s degree in psychology, Taryn plans to open a nonprofit for grief recovery and resiliency. For more information, contact tarynaiken@gmail.com
