Hair Hacks for the NYC Marathon from a Real-Life Marathoner and Top Stylist

The New York City Marathon is just days away and with 26.2 miles to go, the least of a runner’s worries should be their hair! Redken Brand Ambassador and real-life marathoner Rodney Cutler shares a few hair hacks to help you kill it on race day (while still looking great)!

If you’re running the New York Marathon or performing any kind of highly physically engaging activity, fashion-forward hair is probably not high on your list of priorities. But, there’s no reason you can’t look great with some practical advice,” says Rodney.

Here are his top tips:

1. Avoid any products with a high alcohol or salt content (heavy-hold hairsprays, dry shampoos, texturizing “beachy” hair products). Once you start breaking a sweat, these products can run down into your face and cause major discomfort, taking your eye off the prize, literally. Try a humidity resistant, lightweight product like Redken’s move ability 05 lightweight defining cream paste – it’s great for men or women!

2. Also, don’t use products with a heavy fragrance! Over-scented products will drive you crazy by the fifth mile, and you’ve got a lot further to go! Redken’s Hair Cleansing Cream Shampoo is a great option if you’re planning to shampoo your hair the night before or morning of the race.

3. A hairband is a surefire way to keep short hair and bangs out of your face, or, if you need to tame any pesky flyaways, use a lightweight hairspray such as Redken’s fashion work 12 versatile working spray.

4. If your hair is longer, a tightly-braided ponytail pulled taut and low to the nape is ideal for high-endurance activities. Use Redken’s braid aid 03 defining braid lotion for extra grip and hold that will last throughout the race. You’ll look sporty and chic without running the risk of your hair becoming a distraction!
