We talked to Chris Valavanis, the owner and man responsible for its rapid success, and who has seen the inevitable takeoff of a fruitful salon business in the US. He shares with us his reasons for working with Joico and how the brand has helped him as a business owner.

“They have supported Vanis by providing regular apprentice level classes through to the latest trends for our most experienced stylists.”

How important is education nowadays for a salon? What education sources are you and your team taking advantage of?
“The Joico brand has always been committed to Education. Education used to be only about the creative part of our industry. Today, it’s not just about doing great work. Your stylist needs to manage time, manage their social media, monitor their benchmarks, develop goals for service / retail and mentor and inspire younger stylist on the team. Everyone on staff at Vanis has a generous Education fund they can tap into. 50% of the classes they attend are about building their business.”
We noticed you use Twitter to give your customers some insider savings, are there any other innovative ways the salon or the stylists at your salons use social media to promote?
“The salon has a decent social media presence and the staff has theirs. I believe these can be better linked. This is our focus for the coming year.”
How does Vanis Salon give back to it’s community, any charity work?
“Vanis has been engaged in giving back to the community since day one. Besides the countless donated Gift Cards, we do many cutting events. We just raised $9,000 for our local Cancer Resource Center. We annually sponsor local Art Shows and Theater Productions. Each for the Holiday, we ask our staff to commit a dollar amount to a local charity that they have selected. The salon matches their contribution.”
How does Vanis use specials or promotions to improve business, how about the Rewards Program?
“The only promotions we do are the Vanis Rewards program and our Vanis Insider which is promotion to Vanis Clients for last minute service discounts. We only do these quarterly.”
How important is the salon team to Vanis and what steps do you take for a good dynamic?
“The team is everything. As my friend Luis Alvarez says: ‘If you want to go fast… go alone. If you want to go far… go with others.’ “
