NYFW How to Get the Look: Karolyn Pho by Charlie Price for Scruples

Estetica was backstage the Karolyn Pho show with our friend Charlie Price who is working with Scruples this New York Fashion Week. Learn how to get the amazing hair look!

This season, the main character in Karolyn Pho’s story is a vagabond. We follow her as she meanders through castles in the air, traipses between realities and perception. As with seasons past there is an underlying vein of masculinity running throughout Pho’s collection. This season she aimed to further abstract the conditioned perception of femininity and masculinity, with a color palette inspired by the Med-Deco architecture of Miami.

We have the exclusive on the inspiration for the hair look created for the show and Charlie even gave us a step-by-step on how to get the look straight from the runway!

What was the inspiration for this show? “The show is based on children of the corn. It’s a tomboy light and airy look. I think of it as slightly wind blown hair with layers of layers of transparency in the clothes. Everything is very floaty and easy to wear. Even though it’s super cool, all the clothes is very wearable. We have a lot of different textures massaged into the hair to create very light texture and then with that kind of a barber shop detail around the face. Androgyny in the 90s men’s haircut, volume at the front and slick sides, those were our three bullet points from Karolyn Pho on what she wanted the hair look to be.”

How do you feel being here at Fashion Week with Scruples for the first time? “I think being here with Scruples is great because I love them. I love their products and to use their products. I think this is part of the evolution, to show hairdressers what is possible with these products.”

What products did you use to achieve this windswept look? Rock Hard Finishing Spray, Dual Design Gel/Wax, Pearl Finish Pomade, and Blow Dry Spray, all from the Scruples Pearl Collection. The Blow Dry Spray is what’s keeping it really close to the head and slightly dirty looking, but because it’s a blow dry spray it’s going to keep you from looking greasy, because it’s light. It has that perfect wind feeling. Just the perfect amount of texture, it’s mangled.”

Here’s How-To Get the Look straight from Charlie Price!

  1. 1) The first step is to slick back the sides and pull that hair underneath and secure it at the nape with a rubber band.
  2. 2) Then we go through the back with a large curling iron, curl only the mid shaf.
  3. 3) Massage in Pearl Finish Pomade, Dual Design Gel/Wax, and hairspray.
  4. 4) Then we go back to the front and do that again with a lot of Rock Hard Finishing Spray in the front to create the slight pompadour volume at the front feel.
