NAHA 25 Years: Charlie Price On The Life Changing NAHA!

NAHA will be celebrating 25 spectacular years in July, and Estetica is going to bring you a series of exclusive interviews on past winners of NAHA who will share their personal experiences with the event and tips on what it takes to win!

The North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA), a Professional Beauty Association (PBA) event, is one of the most prestigious photographic hairstyling competitions in the world, where they celebrate and recognize hairstyling artists in North America in 14 categories.

We sat down with Charlie Price, who has won the coveted title of NAHA Hairstylist Of The Year two times (in 2002 and 2008) and has been nominated a record of 23 times! He also won NAHA’s People’s Choice honor in 2011, and he shared with us what is means to to enter the NAHA awards. “NAHA provides a great way for a hairstylist to launch a career – the exposure is huge and it’s also really gratifying to compete every year because in doing so you are honing your skill, refining your eye and elevating the craft of hairdressing!”, Charlie said.

When we asked Price on when was the first time he entered and why he chose to enter NAHA, he stated I started entering after one of my idols, Van Council won in the early 1990’s – I wanted to be cool, talented, rich and sexy like him!”

Winning NAHA can mean many different things to for someone’s career, for Charlie Price it was “life-altering”, he explains, Winning once in 2002 put me on the map which was a life altering mind blowing thing because I had entered and never got a nomination – so winning the major award with my first nomination was a feather in my cap! Winning Hairstylist of the Year a second time was fantastic and surreal – I was only the second person to do so and the first American. I think after my appearance on Shear Genius I started to have some detractors so winning that title a second time really solidified my reputation as a stylist to be reckoned with. I was and am very grateful that my work was recognized twice – it truly is a great honor.”

The most memorable moment Price had at the event he told us was “getting handed the NAHA’s People’s Choice award in 2011 by my foul mouthed superstar friend Tabatha Coffey. It was the best and I loved being the first person to ever win that title – it means so much to me that throngs of viewers liked my collection enough to text in and vote for me. It was moving and humbling and exhilarating!

We asked Charlie Price for some advice and tips on how to stand out and win the NAHA awards to share with our readers and he was happy to give his two cents: Tell a memorable story with your entry and make it jump off the screen – so that it really resonates with the judges. Remember they see a lot of work to win, your images need to stand out: hire a great team, model, makeup, wardrobe people and especially a photographer that specializes in beauty and fashion!”
