The Premiere Beauty Show, where seven teams of emerging stylists from Aveda, Farouk, JCPsalon for Matrix, Matrix, P&G Salon Professional, Schwarzkopf Professional and TIGI were to face off, promised to result in a spectacular hair show performance.
When 2,000 salon industry professionals gathered at the Main Stage Theater for this special Premiere Orlando event, over 10,000 votes from all over the world were counted to crown the very first winners of RAW, Team I.C.A.N from P&G Salon Professional, allowing team members Katie Ann Woods, Katey-Bug Browne, Brenton Lee, Kathryn Hornick, and Kristin Bacaycay to take home the $10,000 prize.
PGSP Creative Director Fabio Sementilli, the godfather of the I.C.A.N. Team, so called as it nurtures such attributes as Integrity, Courage, Ambition, Next, inspiring young hairdressers to make all their dreams come true. He urges, “…It’s up to all of us to pass the torch of knowledge and success to the future of our industry.” Sementilli was confident that Diego Raviglione, Wella Top Stylist and Bellus Academy Artistic Director, would be the perfect mentor for the P&G dream team.
Even North America Education Director Carole Protat believes strongly in the I.C.A.N. Team as a strategy for projecting hairdressing in the future. “There is nothing I love more in my job than mentoring and guiding new talents, witness them discover their potential, and see them blossom into amazing artists! Working with team I.C.A.N has been nothing but joy and to see their hard work and dedication pay off was one of the most rewarding experiences of my career.”
Now, with a collective 36 awards to their names, TEAM I.C.A.N is a dynamic mix of young hairdressers with drive and talent that seems can be stopped at nothing! We should be hearing a lot more about these emerging young talents in the near future!
Katie Ann Woods
Age: 24
Hometown: Salinas California
Salon: Salinas Hair Design, Salinas, CA
Personal style: Modern classic.
Signature move: A sleek, big and colorful updo.
Weapons of choice: A teasing comb, curling iron and hairspray.
Inspired by: Architecture. It goes hand in hand with hair because in both, it’s essential to start with a strong base to build upon.
Most important lesson? Diplomacy. We can’t always say what first comes to mind when working with a client.
Katey-Bug Browne
Age: 18
Hometown: Victorville, CA
Salon: The Sassoon Academy, Santa Monica, CA
Personal style: Anything vintage, anything girly with a grungy twist.
Training strategy: I always have mannequin heads handy. There are tons in my apartment and some in the back seat of my car. I bring them EVERYWHERE!
Inspired by: Trees. There are so many different shapes and you can form most of those shapes on a head of hair.
Signature move: Anything with a 45-degree angle.
Brenton Lee
Age: 23
Hometown: West Covina, CA
Salon: Brenton Lee Salon, South Pasadena, CA
Personal style: Young, fresh, urban and classy. I always wear sagging pants with tennis shoes and a bowtie.
Embarrassing moment? I was right out of beauty school, and I worked on a comedienne for a fashion show. I burned her forehead with my curling iron. Not only did she leave my chair, she talked about me during her set!
My personality is most like Michael Jackson because he was a perfectionist.
Why hair? To be surrounded by pretty girls! And I love making people look and feel good.
Kathryn Hornick
Age: 20
Hometown: Minneapolis, MN
Salon: Root Salon, Minneapolis, MN
Personal style: Edgy, unique and 80s-inspired.
Inspired by: Hip hop and indie-rock music. Some of my favorite bands are Input & Broken, Astronautalis and Empires. Can’t go a day without listening to them!
If she weren’t a stylist, she would be: An interior designer or an astronomer.
Three words that describe her: Persevering, innovative, dreamer.
Why hair? To fulfill my need for creativity and be surrounded by good people and conversation.
Kristin Bacaycay
Age: 27
Hometown: San Diego, CA
Salon: The Loft Hair Design and Skin Care, Escondido, CA
Weapon of choice: A flat iron. It’s amazing the designs you can create with a tool meant for straightening!
What she brings to the team: An open mind, optimism and creativity.
Most important lesson? Welcome constructive criticism with open arms!
Most embarrassing moment? Using too much ash tone on grey hair.Yikes! Green machine!
