Although we’re never quite sure what to expect, how can we not love what Charlie Le Mindu does with Hairdreams real human hair extensions?
Charlie Le Mindu never fails to astound us with his vision of hair as much more than a mere fashion accessory, but rather as a social statement, making a name for himself on the international fashion scene, also thanks to his VIP fans like Lady Gaga and Lana del Rey sporting his works in public. Charlie recently presented his new Fall/Winter 2012 collection at the recent Fashion Weeks in London and Paris, this time inspired by 1930’s futurism with a French “je ne sais quoi”. But this time he took it one step further, debuting in a music video with his own ironic version of Grease’s “Dirty School Dropout” entitled “Beauty School Dropout”, directed by Europe’s celebrated, unconventional filmmaker Zoe Hitchen (don’t miss it at www.charlielemindu.com).
His chosen medium is hand-selected 100% human hair extensions from Hairdreams, his lines in this collection are geometric for futuristic haute-couture headpieces evoking Art Deco tea pots in black and lilac. The 17th-century “Toile de Jouy” wardrobe confirms the classic French matrix of his inspiration. Instead, the oversized lilac and black coolie hats remind us of Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. In this way he succeeds in wrapping up myriad epochs and styles that make his revolutionary innovations seem somehow nostalgic and familiar.
But although Le Mindu is known for working with hair, his most controversial pieces are seldom found on the head, and this collection is no different. The show-stopper is the a lilac evening gown with a trendy braided bodice, made out of thousands of violet Hairdreams strands.
Charlie’s live performance at “Le Trianon” Theatre in Paris spurred a standing ovation from the trade press. Small wonder he has been named “Avant-Garde Hair Director” at London‘s prestigious flagship department store “Harrods”.
