Beauty & Elegance: Horsing Around

Saturday, 24 May 2014 17:29

The Chinese Year of the Horse promises bucking, up-start energy and galloping adventurous change.

"Horses inspire us because of their elegance and beauty. They are also fascinating because of their strength and grace,” observes Charlie Price, Scruples International Creative Consultant. And while the last Year of the Wood Horse was all about iconically demure hair: Jacqueline Kennedy’s wedding coif, and Audrey Hepburn’s boy-crop in “Roman Holiday”, in this turn of the wagon-wheel, hair design jumps the fence with unbridled creativity, suggesting the strength of a horse whose spirit will never be broken.

This season’s styles corral the wild side of the horse and tame the willful creature just enough for show. Many of the season’s most original looks are highly structured, featuring braids. Hair plaited across the hairline suggests the velvet helmet worn by competitive equestriennes. Try this elegant look with tailored tweeds and posh riding boots. Long, unbound braids call up the timeless landscape of the American Southwest – wear yours with fringed soft deerskin and bold turquoise jewelry.

Joi Rooks, KMS California Brand Artist Team Member and Owner of Fresche Hair Salon & Boutique adds, “Braids aren't leaving, from triple braids, to fish tail braids to braids wrapped around the entire head and braided buns. It's a lifestyle-hairstyle, a little bohemian, mixed with a free spirit dreamer.”
