The Shag is out of the bag

The latest lockdown surprise is the revival of 70's/80’s hairstyling trend - the Shag is one of them - that perhaps reflects a more laid-back and casual mood of being able to work, shop, exercise, etc. from home.

Fashion whether on the runway, the streets, a concert stage or anywhere else – is often dictated by events and lifestyles. And nothing has done more to change both of these factors than on-again/off-again Covid-19 lockdowns essentially worldwide. So it might have to do with us living in our sweatpants at home or not being able to get to our fave hair salon, but the up side to this downside of the pandemic is definitely the return of the Shag!

According to Sam Ashcroft, creative team member at Brooks & Brooks, London, the Shag is casual, sexy and effortless. “The typical features that make up a shag hairstyle include choppy, dishevelled ends, layers around the crown, and lots of texture. The modern shag is choppy and has lots of texture, but doesn’t make you look like everyone in an ‘80s hair metal band.

The key to getting this shag cut right and bang on is the fringe. Get the fringe right and the haircut will always fall into place. Longish or shorter, with a sideswept fringe or just brushing the eyebrows, this is a look that keeps you looking good and is easy to maintain during times when it may be more difficult for your hairdresser to squeeze you in for your regular appointment.

Another plus is that the Shag works with just about any colour service you can imagine, thanks to the extraordinary texture and movement this haircut provides.

Sam comments, “Coppers and redheads will also look amazing with this haircut. It’s a color that will turn heads and, when worn with this haircut, will do exactly that. For those who want to really go for the grunge look, go pink. A pink shag is something of beauty. It just works, from pastel rose to vibrant pink, choose a tone that suits your skin complexion.”

Not into colour? Go natural! Go easy! Go shag!
