Video Alert HOW TO! Malan Breton's Romantic Whimsical Style by Vivienne Mackinder for Joico

Saturday, 17 September 2016 20:43

On September 8th opening day for arguably the most famous week in fashion – certainly in New York city and the entirety of the U.S., New York Fashion Week – designer Malan Breton showcased his Spring/Summer 2017 women’s and men’s collection at the Hammerstein Ballroom at Manhattan Center.

With 50 models that included, Brian Batt (Mad Men), Nene Leakes (RHOA, Glee), Frankie Grande (Big Brother) and Real Housewives of Beverly Hills’ Camille Grammer’s daughter, Mason Grammer, the show was exciting, whimsical and certainly JOI-filled” with Joico as hair sponsor – truly an exhibition of refined flash. A show “de la mode raffinée.”

The stars certainly came out to play, but it was industry icon, hairstylist Vivienne Mackinder and her team of over 20 hairstylists sponsored by Joico, the name in healthy hair, who were backstage making the hair match the mashup of Gatsby-era whimsy, sparkle and 70’s very wearable, relaxed glamour. Throw in a bit of gossamer, baroque and sequins, and you’ve got Malan Breton’s vision for a Taiwanese journey: “Sanxiantai” and the vision for Vivienne’s hair-looks. Vivienne recounts the experience in her own words:

"There’s nothing more thrilling then to see your hairstyles walk down the runway on an international stage. It was an honor to work with Malan Breton for NYFW Sp/Su ‘17. Malan is a brilliant designer, who embraces total style and wanted to see beautiful hair walk the runway. When he told me how important the hair was, I felt excited and nervous at the same time. The challenge of fashion week is working fasts and making the looks appear natural. Fashion week is notorious for running late partly because models go from show to show and if the previous show runs late it’s a domino effect!  We had models arrive 20 minutes before the show. Thankfully with a great team and amazing products from Joico, the show was a huge success.  It was thrilling to see the girls and boys walk the runway, and the press loved the show. For me this show was a reminder of how thankful I am for my background in classical training, with a huge repertoire of skills I received from the London College of Fashion where I was trained in hair for film and theater."

"I made a video on how I created the romantic whimsical style, which you can view here. And I want to say a huge thank you to my team, to Joico and to Montgomery Frazier the fashion Guru and of course the brilliant Malan Breton."

LOOK 1: Vivienne created a more structured style with a twist braided into a sleek ponytail, capturing the essence of the ’70’s.

1. First, on wet hair apply Joico’s Power Whip to help add volume. Blow dry hair straight away from the face.
2. Next, spray Joico’s IronClad Thermal Protectant Spray on dry hair before styling. To create the faux hawk section, set hair with a large curling iron leaving out the ends making them straight and add in a hair pad at the crown of the head for extra volume.
3. Then, apply hair extensions at the nape of the neck to create the ponytail.
4. With the hair around the front of the face, back comb hair pulling it away from the face as well as the base of the hair and mesh hair together from mid shaft to the ends.
5. Smooth hair over with the hair pad to create a sleek effect. Note, the fullest part of the hair style is at the crown. The rest of the hair is then pinned into a twist at the base of the bun and secured with a long chignon pin.
6. The hair under the hair pad (from crown to nape) is then lightly back combed at the roots. Then take hair into a 3 strand rope and braid into the nape of the head.
7. Then, secure the ponytail in a band and then pull apart the braided twist so that it does not look like a braid but has a twisted texture.
8. Finish of the look by spraying Joico’s Power Spray Fast Dry Finishing Spray to seal in the look (conversely you can use Flip Turn Volumizing Finishing Spray, to help acquire the effective proportion in the hair).

LOOK 2: Vivienne pulled the 1970s through with a bohemian style that had a 1920s whimsical wave. She waved the hair with a flat iron and tied it back for a whimsical effect for a sexy, pretty, and ethereal style.

Technique: “The Flat Wave”
1. First, depending on hair texture and length apply Joico’s Power Whip for volume or Joico’s Power Spray Fast Dry Finishing Spray to help hold the style. If needed, apply hair extensions for added length and volume.
2. Next, apply Joico’s IronClad Thermal Protectant Spray before using a flat iron in hair to create waves. Working from the nape to the top of the head, each wave should start 2 inches away from the roots, with no specific patterns to create an undone look. To create the “Flat Wave” pattern, walk the iron to the left and then to the right pushing the hair through the iron in an “S” pattern. Spray Joico’s Power Spray Fast Dry Finishing Spray to set the hair and leave any short pieces fall around the face.
3. Then, take the side sections of the hair from the temple up and gather into a loose pony tail. Then twist and pull apart, add Hair Shake to ends for a soft undone look – very whimsical and glides down the runway.
4. Lastly, spray Joico’s Power Spray Fast Dry Finishing Spray to seal in the look and apply a small amount of Joico’s K-PAK Protect & Shine Serum to create shine and separation of the waves.
