Redken Artists celebrate National Hairstylist Appreciation Day

Each day, we are thankful for the talented few that stand behind the salon chair for the sole purpose of making those sitting in their chair feel confident, beautiful and fearless.

With Thursday, April 30th marking the annual National Hairstylist Appreciation Day, Redken would like to give an extra shout-out to hairstylists everywhere for their lending ear, confidence boosts, support and friendship.

Ranging from students to veterans, the Redken community is one that encompasses some of the most talented people in the business. To celebrate one of the oldest professions in the world, several Redken Artists who have been with the brand between 10-20 years reflect on their favorite moments and how the industry and Redken has helped to shape them.

Scot Sherman, with Redken since 1991:

I started my adult years as an unskilled employee. After a few short months in a Redken school, I became a skilled hairdresser. In my first Redken salon, I learned how to touch people with care. As a Redken Artist, I learned how to touch people’s lives for the better. Redken has been with me on my journey for 25 years now. Like my wife of 30 years, I’m looking forward to many more.”

Mandy McCullough, with Redken since 2003:

National Hairstylist Appreciation Day provides the perfect opportunity to reflect on how my career as a hairstylist has influenced who I am today. As a stylist, I get to make people feel amazing and beautiful. A salon visit is one of the rare moments when people take time to invest in themselves and I always look forward to creating that experience for them. My work as a Redken Artist over the last 12 years has provided me with the privilege of traveling across the country meeting other like-minded salon professionals and joining them in our love of learning. Together, we raise the expectation of what it means to be a Hairstylist. As a salon owner, I now look forward to recruiting, hiring and training the next generation of talented hairstylists. Their enthusiasm is contagious and I love helping them exceed their personal idea of success. I wake up every morning with love and gratitude for the career I have chosen and those I get to share it with.”

Summer Sararo, with Redken since 2005:

Redken has shown me what it really means to be a hairdresser. I get to touch people’s lives in a very unique way. Although we get to play dress up all day (a childhood dream), there is a much deeper meaning; I have the chance to make people feel good about themselves and feel more comfortable in their own skin. To look in the mirror and feel beautiful is empowering and for that minute, you forget your troubles and are sometimes more willing to take them on. Redken has shaped me both personally and professionally. Redken has given me the confidence and training, through principle-based learning, to carry myself artfully behind the chair. Above all, Redken has shown me what it means to pay it forward and help other stylists in our industry be the best they can be. Redken has an amazing team of people that truly care about the stylists’ education and are eager to help them achieve a better quality of life. Redken has taken me places I would have never dreamt of going and given me a voice I didn’t even know that I had. Redken has shown me not only how to create my goals but how to conquer them. They have made me “not just a hairdresser,” in the words of Kris Sorbie, but the person I am today.”

Angela Berk, with Redken since 1998:

I’ve been a hairstylist for 33 years and I’m always amazed how doing beautiful hair can impact lives. The personal transformation you see in someone after a hair color or hair design never gets old and has allowed me personally to get through some rough days. Being a hairstylist allows me to give back to individuals everyday by making them feel better about themselves. I’ve learned that if you can make someone feel beautiful on the outside; it can also help them heal and feel healthy on the inside. Redken was the first product I used and I’m still using it 30 years later! Redken keeps me on trend and keeps me up to date on new technology I can then pass on to my clients. Redken gave me the coaching and road map to succeed. I work hard but Redken gives me the tools to keep the balance of work and family. I truly believe in the motto the company has taught me: “Earn a Better Living, Live a Better Life.”

Keri Bailes, with Redken since 2009:

Growing up I always knew I wanted to be a hairdresser but my dreams never made it this far. This career is far more fulfilling than I could have ever imagined. Being a hairdresser is so much more than my career, it’s about connecting with people on a physical and emotional level. It’s using art and talent to create a look that not only makes people feel beautiful on the outside, but makes them feel the same way on the inside. Every client has a story and in some way, each client has changed my life. Being a Redken Artist has changed my life in so many ways – the places I’ve been, the people I’ve met, the experiences I’ve had – they have all made me who I am. I feel so blessed to be a part of such an amazing tribe.”
