Tuesday, 22 July 2014 23:13

Aveda congratulates Chris Rushton, Logan 14 Salon Spa, Washington DC and Van Michael Salon, Atlanta, Georgia, all Aveda winners at the Professional Beauty Association’s 2014 North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA).

Aveda Institute graduate Chris Rushton was named the 2014 Newcomer Stylist of the Year. The 23-year-old stylist works at Aveda Lifestyle Salon Logan 14 Salon Spa in Washington D.C. “This whole experience has been incredible and I am truly honored for this win,” Rushton said. “I always believe that fortune favors the brave and to succeed you must put in the work and I did that with this collection. I pushed myself so hard and took a huge risk and it paid off.”

With excellence in education a priority at Aveda, Rushton is a clear example of Aveda’s commitment to nurturing new talent through first class education. Resulting in loud cheers from the crowd during his acceptance speech, Rushton thanked the members of his Aveda family that inspired him in his journey including Logan 14 Salon Spa owners Wendi Dofflemyer and Michael Hodges, and his longtime mentor, Logan 14 Salon and Spa Instructor and Aveda Purefessional Juan Perez.

“Juan has really sculpted my eye for beauty; he’s raised my taste and sensibility as an artist giving me a larger than life energy,” Rushton added.Juan, Wendy, Michael and the Aveda Global Artistic Team are so inspirational and supportive. I’m so grateful I went to an Aveda Institute right from the beginning of my career because it was so right for me, truly growing me from my roots as an artist and dedicated worker. Aveda not only cares about the world we live in, but for all of their stylists as well, it is truly a loving and loyal family.”

During his heartfelt speech, Rushton also thanked his mother, Carm Holley, who worked as a hair styling instructor while raising Rushton and sharing with him the craft of hairdressing. Rushton attended and graduated from the Aveda Institute Washington DC. Along with producing print and television work, Rushton has more than 1 million views of his hair tutorials on his YouTube Channel.

Aveda concept salons Van Michael Salon in Atlanta, Georgia won Salon Team of the Year award. Prior to the win, the team presented a 9-model runway show titled Gothloli that married the ideas behind Japanese anime and the film Lolita. Looks seen on the models included short textured looks, geometric shapes and hair pieces with bold shaved segments.

The Van Michael Salon team, as headed by Daniel Holzberger, Creative Director for Van Michael Salons, and Natalie Gurley, Director of Hair Color Education for Van Michael Salons, created anime cartoons of the model looks that played in tandem with the presentation.

Allen Ruiz, Aveda Global Artistic Director, Hair Styling, and the 2013 North American Hairstylist of The Year, opened the 2014 North American Hairstyling Awards ceremony with Chameleon Stealth, a stunning runway show featuring 5 models morphed into reptilian goddesses with hairstyles of serpentine shapes fused together with snake patterns and textures, for which Allen and the team received a standing ovation from the crowd.

Ruiz was inspired to create this body of work based on Sumerian mythology, X-Man’s Mystique, shapeshifters, and other fantastical lore. Ruiz was assisted by a team of Aveda stylists and included two members of the Aveda Global Artistic Team: Janell Geason, Aveda Global Artistic Director of Makeup and Ian Michael Black, Aveda Global Artistic Director of Hair Color.

Aveda celebrates the commitment and creative spirit of all the Professional Beauty Association’s 2014 North American Hairstyling Awards finalists. The North American Hairstyling Awards is one of the most prestigious photographic hairstyling and beauty competitions in North America, saluting technical excellence and artistic expression in hairdressing, as well as salon design aesthetic and beauty business acumen. There were 13 finalists from the Aveda network in the 2014 competition.
