In Memoriam: Toni Mascolo

Yesterday the TONI&GUY family announced the passing of their beloved founder & leader Giuseppe Toni Mascolo. Toni was surrounded by his family at the time of his death. The industry will forever love him, and he will be dearly missed by the Estetica family as we share in the loss of this legend.

Following in his father’s hairdressing footsteps, the OBE, Honorary Professor of Durham University and consummate professional, launched, along with his brother Guy, TONI&GUY as a single salon in Clapham, South London.

Over the course of more than 50 years, one salon grew to become more than 600 salons around the globe including the launch of a smaller salon group, essensuals, a multi-award winning professional haircare range, label.m, and 19 TONI&GUY academies worldwide. ‘Education, education, education’ was a known motto of Toni’s, and indeed the cornerstone of the Superbrand.

Toni Mascolo was highly respected within the hairdressing community, he was known as approachable and someone who made time for everyone. It is no surprise that he built up a lengthy list of achievements, which transcended the industry to include business, entrepreneurship and charity. He along with his wife Pauline started the TONI&GUY Charitable Foundation in 2003, which has raised more than £2,014,735 for a variety of causes and organizations.

But it wasn’t all about hair, Toni was an avid supporter of Chelsea Football Club, and launched or has been involved with, several independent projects such as coffee shops, property, and most recently his very own pasta sauce.

Toni is survived by his wife Pauline, brothers Bruno and Anthony and his children Sacha, Christian and Pierre and his many grandchildren.

When I heard the sudden news of Toni’s passing, I struggled to hold back my sense of deep sadness at the loss of a dear friend with whom I have shared forty years’ experience in the professional hairdressing industry. I have been looking through my copy of the autobiography which Toni gave me; this has helped remind me of the exemplary story of the unique and incomparable ‘hairdresser to the world’. Immersing myself in his words has helped me feel more and more reassured, as it felt almost as though it was Toni himself –with his smile and expressiveness– who was reading out those salient passages to me; each sentence read with that typical Italian pride of a guy who has ‘made it’. Toni Mascolo’s life was like an intense and passionate love story – not only for his family and for many people who knew and worked with him, but for the whole world of hairdressing,” said Roberto Pissimiglia, EsteticaNetwotk Publisher
