Beauty’s Breaking News – Sonya Dove says Goodbye to The Doves Salon for New Bold Changes in her Brilliant Career!

Friday, 29 September 2017 15:39

Sonya Dove is one of our industry's most respected international hairdressers and colorist, making a name for herself throughout the world for her signature color combinations and a sparkly charisma onstage that is present with every artist she educates.

As co-owner of The Doves by DNA she and her team have come to the decision of not renewing the lease to her salon, and wants to come on the foreground as to why she came to this decision.

After 10 years as co-owner we decided not to renew it, it is an amicable decision between all the partners in the salon,” says Sonya. “All of us have these fantastic opportunities going for us and running a salon was truly a lot of work and a different type of work to do with everything else.”

In an industry where a step like this might be painted in a negative light, this is a decision made mutually by the four partners, also major colorists and educators themselves, Aubrey Loots and Danny Leclair in addition to Christopher Dove.

Looking good was a big factor in this process, I want to try and balance some pleasure over work and you have to let something go, so it’s not this stigma that I failed, I just don’t enjoy it,” says Sonya on her decision. “It’s being bold and brave enough to admit that this isn’t something we love, all about ego. I know so many people that do not like running a salon. They see the burden it takes to run a business, so that’s why everybody is in good spirits, we are all going to stay connected.

Amongst the many roles she plays within the industry, Sonya Dove is an icon who continues to inspire, educate and mentor salon professionals around the globe as Wella Professionals Global Top Artist; Wella/ULTA Pro Team; and Hairdreams Ambassador!

Shifting gears on her career in order to open some space for herself is a bold and very important message to stylist wrapped around the struggles of running a salon. “It’s all about a change and balance and starting to enjoy my free time and living where I live, being open to other opportunities that may come my way,” says Sonya. “From a Wella point of view I could be with them forever; Wella is my family!

And so, Sonya will continue to be Wella Professionals Global Brand Ambassador, on the consumer side and the trade side. My work is now going consumer, with Wella celebrities and events, even social media influencers and bloggers!

As for her best The Doves by DNA Salon memories? “Building an incredible team of stylists the people. I spent my personal time with them. I had a blast on a daily basis but that’s going to end. We all made sure to take care of the team it so we’ll have to meet for drinks after work!

Sonya will be in NYC onstage for the Intercoiffure Fall Atelier with a lot of great surprises for the association and ESTETICA will be there to get the latest on this hair guru’s secrets to creating and mentoring, which, in her words, is all about “leaving the best possible legacy in the industry that I love.”
