Shu Uemura Gallery of Style: Hair by Karly Cagliani

The 6 National semi-finalists in the Shu Uemura Gallery of Style competition have been selected and we were in NYC to chat with them. Karly Cagliani is a stylist at Matthew Morris salon in Denver, CO and shares some of her experience and journey though this amazing competition.

Karly is competing to win a professional photo shoot and immersion in Tokyo, the brand’s city of origin and continued source of inspiration. She was challenged to interpret the contest theme, “Tokyo Vibe,” by bringing to life Tokyo’s harmonious contradiction of sense of ritual and extreme attention to detail.

When did you start working with the products?
"I started working with the products at the salon this past August so I am pretty new at working with Shu. I love the flexibility and hold of their products. They are very soft and create great texture."

So you have Italian roots and are located in Denver, but competing in a Japanese hairstylist competition. Truly international!
"Yeah, I’m all over the place. I am the first one in my family that has done hair but I do feel that I come from a creative background. My dad does a lot of woodworking so I think that has affected me."

Tell me about these amazing travels you are having around the world!
"It’s been a whirlwind, that’s for sure. This is my first time in New York, and there have been a lot of first experiences in these past few months. Matthew has helped me out a lot along the way so I am grateful that he’s been there every step of the way."

Tell me about the inspiration of the look?
"I feel like I was very inspired by the Japanese street style, mainly the Harajuku girls. I took from that style. I looked at Tokyo fashion and attempted to recreate that in a new way. I sat and stared at a mannequin for hours trying to think of something that hadn’t been done before. I would cry if I won! Shu is amazing for taking me around and showing me everything."

THE INSPIRATION: "Japanese street style is all about standing out. Decora girls love to make a statement. I was inspired by the bright colors and decorated hairstyles worn in Harajuku fashion. My look was influenced by their eye-catching fringe and double ponytails. Detail Master gave me maximum control while creating the overlapping back. For smooth, flexible control I applied both Shape Paste and Kengo Feather before braiding and looping her fringe. Texture Wave gave me the ability to add volume and amplify her curls for a more dramatic finish. To complete the look I generously used Sheer Lacquer for a strong hold, but soft finish."

THE PRODUCTS: "I used Detail Master, Shape Paste, Kengo Feather, Texture Wave, Sheer Lacquer."

Three U.S. Finalists will be announced in the next days and the three Global Winners will be announced in September 2016... check back with us for more updates on the talented Semi-Finalists!
