Paul Mitchell Schools provide Day of Pampering on Cancer Survivor Beauty and Support Day

Paul Mitchell Schools joined thousands of beauty salons nationwide on June 7, 2016, by opening their doors and extending a special invitation to cancer patients and survivors for Cancer Survivor Beauty and Support Day.

The all-volunteer national event takes place each year on the first Tuesday in June, when participating locations provide a day of complimentary pampering for all men, women, and children cancer survivors, regardless of the type of cancer or when they were diagnosed. It is held in all 50 states, with each supporting facility offering beauty services of their choice.

Paul Mitchell Schools have participated in this event for many years. When asked why, Paul Mitchell Schools Dean and Cofounder Winn Claybaugh explained, “I believe all of us have been touched by cancer. Cancer Survivor Beauty and Support Day provides hope, and hope is one of the best commodities on the planet.”

Over 100 participating Paul Mitchell Schools celebrated this special day in a variety of ways. Here are a few examples:

At Paul Mitchell The School Birmingham in Hoover, Alabama, patients and survivors received free haircuts, shampoos, makeovers, and manicures. Students and staff there said it was important to remind the patients that they are beautiful and strong. One staff member told WBRC News, “They’ve been through a lot, these cancer survivors. They have days where they don’t feel good, they don’t feel like getting out of bed, they’re losing their hair, they haven’t been able to put on makeup or feel pretty or feel good about themselves for a possible while now. So we just want them, for their perseverance, to know they’re cared about and loved.”

At the recently opened Paul Mitchell The School Richland in Richland, Washington, students and staff celebrated their first Cancer Survivor Beauty and Support Day by offering free haircuts and styles to all cancer patients and survivors. School Director Emily Ransier said, “Just to have a day for yourself, just to feel good, to forget about maybe what’s going on, just to be pampered, I think that’s what’ we’re all about.

At Paul Mitchell The School Las Vegas, one woman came to get her hair done because it had recently begun to grow back after years of treatment. “People would look at you like you’re a freak or something,” Yvonna Moore told KTNV News in Las Vegas. “For people who have been through a lot in their life and are fighters or survivors, it’s things like this that just keep them going.

Rudy and Kelly Academy, A Paul Mitchell Partner School in Virginia Beach, Virginia, provided a day of fun and beauty for their special guests, including lona, a three-time cancer survivor who shared her story and inspired the students who spent time with her.
