America's Prime Salons: Glynn Jones Salon shines brilliantly with Joico by its side

Tuesday, 17 November 2015 22:32

Glynn Jones, Head Sylist and Creative Director of Glynn Jones Salon, is the style mastermind to a DC salon that is luxurious minus the pretension, and brings a unique British style and approach in hair design to the DC Metro area.

Manchester-born and educated by Vidal Sassoon, Glynn is both fabulous and kind, with the perfect combination of talent and skill to bring life to every unique hair styling challenge he approaches.

Each stylist at Glynn Jones is personally trained by Glynn himself for a minimum of six months to a year to ensure the highest quality of service for their patrons. The Glynn Jones experience can be had at one of two distinct locations: Old Town in Alexandria and Dupont Circle in the District. Each salon offers a catered British European experience to the clients that walk in, which is why ESTETICA sat down with the Joico-partnered salon to talk about how the brand has helped his business grow.

How is it partnering with a company like Joico?
"We have been partnered with Joico for thirteen years now. It’s been a wonderful experience for us. They have been with us since our early days when we opened our first location with one stylist; they are still with us thirteen years later with twenty chairs in our flagship Old Town store and eleven chairs in our Dupont Circle location. They have been instrumental in our growth and success."

What makes the Joico brand so unique?
"Joico is a high quality color product line backed up with a full retail line of products. We like to offer our clients styling, cleansing, and conditioning products manufactured by the company we use for color. To back up the color lines, Joico has in-salon education that we have found to be second to none."

What are some Joico products you absolutely cannot live without?
"Our three best sellers are humidity blocker, color endure shampoo and conditioner, and K-PAK Revitaluxe treatment."

What is some advice that you can provide to up and coming entrepreneurs in running a successful business?
"Partner with a reliable professional hair color and retail product company. Offer continuing education to keep your team motivated and up to date with the latest styles and techniques. Have a strong vision of how you want your salon to be. Communicate your vision to your team and stay focused."

How important is education for your salon? What education sources are you and your team taking advantage of?
"Education is one of the most important things in running a busy, high-end salon. We have junior, senior, and master stylists, but we insist that all of our stylists attend our ongoing in-salon education. Joico offers a large variety of styling and product knowledge classes along with more advanced education at the artistic institute in Darien, CT. We have paid for all of our in-salon education with Joico points earned with our color and retail purchases. Our salon has no out of pocket expense for our education program."

What does the Salon do to encourage a team mentality when you have two locations that are so geographically far from each other?
"We have monthly meetings with our managers and our front desk coordinators to make sure we’re keeping communication open and to ensure that our managers are all on the same page. Our managers have weekly one-on-one meetings with our stylists to talk about issues, sales, and retail numbers to keep everyone motivated and to feel a part of the team while still getting individual attention."

How important are the charitable organizations to Glynn Jone  Salon? What ways are you giving back to the community?
"We regularly donate services and Joico gift baskets as well as gift cards for hair services to many local charitable organizations. We have found this a free form of advertising from those charitable events that have paid back many times over, and helped to make us an involved member of the community."

Glynn Jones has a lot of international talent or educated abroad. Glynn Jones, the creative director, is from Manchester. Do you feel this factor strengthens the salon’s business at all?
"We have employed stylists from seven different countries and the USA. We truly are an international group. We find that we all learn from each other’s different training from around the world. We are a melting pot of talent – like a big international artistic family."

How do you use social media to grow business? Are all of the stylists involved through the salon or do they help engage in the salon’s business digitally at all?
"We employee a social media manager and we also have a web designer on our pay roll. This is something most salon businesses neglect to do. In this age of smart phones, online booking and social media you need to stay connected and engaged with your clients. Our stylists not only see the book live on their smart phones but save color formulas and prices that go direct to our front desk through our booking app. Our website is updated every month with fresh landing pages informing our clients of our special promotions. We also send out a month e-newsletter. We ask all of our stylists to submit before and after images of clients color, cuts, and styling. We post these on facebook, Instagram, and twitter to promote the stylists, the salon, and the Glynn Jones brand. We encourage our stylists to get involved on our social media pages- showing off their personality as well as their skill!"

Finish this sentence: This salon cannot survive without_______. Why?
"A strong leader. Amazing hairstylists. Unparalleled customer service. A clear vision and goals. Communication from the owner all the way down to the salon assistants. A hard-working professional team. Have fun, follow these steps and you will also have an amazing, successful salon business."
