Cognizance by Chelsea James

Friday, 23 February 2018 15:13

Cognizance means knowledge, awareness or notice, jurisdiction or responsibility, which was the inspiration behind these eccentric interpretations of hair art by hairstylist Chelsea James.

Fast fashion, oil and plastic are such an integral part of our assets within our daily routines in professional beauty. James saw an opportunity to create content focused on some of the devastating effects these controversial topics have on the beauty industry and the world around us. Below find her reasons for the selection of subject matter and styling choices and how each of the three situations below impact our world.

FAST FASHION:
"The textile industry occupies roughly 5% of all landfill space,” states James of her lighted collection where the hair is composed of a yarn-like material. “The clothing that is discarded into landfills is often made from synthetic or inorganic materials which prevents these textiles from being able to degrade properly. Fast fashion employs manual workers in sweatshops - employed for hard labor under poor working conditions with severe health and safety risks. 85% of the workers are women."

PLASTIC:
"10% of plastic debris in ocean water comes from land-based sources, responsible for 0.8 million tons every year,” shares James of this phenomenon. "The breakdown of biodegradable plastics release methane - a very powerful greenhouse gas that contributes significantly to global warming. Plankton, fish, and ultimately the human race, through the food chain, ingest these highly toxic carcinogens and chemicals; which increase the risk of cancer, immune disorders, and birth defects."

OIL:
"Deforestation for oil products means the destruction of medicinal and food resources, expelling indigenous people from their communities – along with committing a heinous crime against nature, all leading to suffering, disaster and chaos,” says James of her last images with punctured texture within a topknot.
