Not longer only for gala events, updos go urban – and there are 3 mega hair trends in 2018 that those with long hair can't possibly ignore. The no.1 Rule are styles that are too clean-cut and defined; hair must look natural. Then indulge in updos that go urban and ponytails with a 90s flair or that are embellished with accessories.

URBAN UPDO

Hairstyles that adapt to evening wear, but also to street style. And so, updos go urban. Like the one that Matteo Susini created for the Fragments collection, combining both rigour and sentiment. “Rigour for its compliance with global beauty standards, sentiment because it is ready to break the rules and bring change…. This is the birth of an updo with irregular yet appealing volumes, that twine together chic details that are also urban,” explains Matteo Susini, Creative Director of Loft Parrucchieri.

PONYTAILS

The hair look with a strong personality that gives a nod to the 1990s. So why not try the maxi and ultra-sleek ponytail, like the techno tail that Eugene Souleiman created for the Jeremy Scott SS18 collection. “A look that is one of my favorites, stunning and natural, it’s what I call the Techno Tail. Decisive and strong, this twist on the classic ponytail sees the hair modelled and pulled back to life the tail over the neckline,” tells Eugene Souleiman, Global Creative Director for Wella Professionals and ghd Ambassador.

But the stars of the 2018 hairstyling trends and catwalks are low ponytails. In the Alberta Ferretti show the elastic used to tie hair back became the leading accessory. The ponytail also added to the charm of the Miu Miu show. An ultra-chic colurful silk scarf hugs the Lanvin ponytail, while a Plexiglas top hat makes Chanel’s glamorous. And then there are the more extravagant tails, like that of the Francesco Group’s Bohemian collection: an infinite number of elastics bring to life a bizarre and amusing accessory.

INDIVIDUALITY AND NATURAL EFFECT

Messy, natural coifs with a clean silhouette that exalt individuality like the one created for the Ricostru SS18 show by TIGI. “We created a type of hairlook that is ultra modern and very natural, that could reflect the look of each individual model. TIGI worked to highlight the personality of each one, fixing and emphasising their natural look,” explains Maria Kovacs, TIGI European Session Director.

And so the hair has a lived-in look with full movement, the result of which imitates the process of air drying outdoors. “When we think of natural hair, people tend to imagine that the final result is a bit messy. This is absolutely not the case,” affirmed Guido Palau, Global Creative Director of Redken. "The simple and modern look he created for the SS 2018 Alexander Wang runway requires only two tools, the ghd air hairdryer and the ghd classic curl tong.” After having made a messy middle parting with his finger, the strands of hair were in fact wrapped gently around the ghd classic curl tong to give a natural movement, volume, and extravagant waves. A high-quality hairdryer instead reduces the drying time and limits damage to hair, helping to obtain a more natural movement.
